The Institute for Clinical Diabetology investigates mechanisms of the development and progression of diabetes mellitus and its sequelae. The research groups also perform studies on the prevention, as well as the efficacy and safety of new concepts for treating diabetes and its comorbidities and complications.
Diabetes mellitus comprises heterogeneous metabolic disorders, which have hyperglycemia as their common feature. Various factors contribute to the pathogenesis and progression to diabetes mellitus.
Identification of these factors and their integration into a pathophysiological concept are key to develop innovative approaches for the prevention and therapy of diabetes, prediabetic states and associated diseases.
