The German Center (DDZ) is a Leibniz Institute for diabetes research at the Heinrich-Heine- University (HHU) Düsseldorf. The DDZ as interdisciplinary research institute links molecular and cell biological basic research with clinical and epidemiological research approaches. The DDZ has the aim to develop new approaches to prevention, early detection and diagnosis of Diabetes mellitus and to improve the therapy of Diabetes mellitus and the treatment of its complications. The German Diabetes Center is a member of the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) which is funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research.

The Research Group “Pathobiochemistry” (Head: Prof. Dr. Hadi Al-Hasani) of the Institute for Clinical Biochemistry and Pathobiochemistry at the German Diabetes Center focuses on the molecular analysis of insulin action, and identification of novel susceptibility genes for type 2 diabetes (e.g. Springer et al. Diabetes. 2024).  We are looking for a highly motivated

Doctorate Student (PhD; m/f/div.)

for the elaboration of a doctoral thesis on the subject of

Integration of Insulin and Contraction Signaling in Skeletal Muscle Glucose Metabolism

This thesis is going to encompass the isolation, culture and differentiation of primary skeletal muscle cells from human and mouse donors and subsequent in vitro investigations of substrate utilization, exercise physiology and insulin signaling.

Your profile

  • You hold a Master degree in biochemistry, biology, or a related field.
  • You are very experienced in standard methods of molecular and biomedical work (e.g. Western Blot analysis, immunohistochemistry)
  • A theoretical background on diabetes and diabetic complications is an advantage
  • You are ambitious in developing and applying new techniques and your own expertise to propel the project.
  • An excellent written and spoken command of the English language is mandatory
  • You are communicative, team-oriented person who is willing to work in an international surrounding

Wir erwarten von Ihnen

Initially the position is to be awarded for 2 years starting on 1st January 2026 or later. An extension of the contract period is envisaged. The employment contract is governed by TV-L in its current version for North Rhine-Westphalia including the special regulations regarding the scientific area. The salary is based on qualification and experience according to TV-L.
