People with diabetes mellitus appear to have a high need for information. It is probably greater than that of people with other chronic diseases. Although appropriate information is a prerequisite for effective self-management, there is currently little known about the information needs of people with diabetes. In particular, there is a lack of information about specific needs within sub-groups, making it more difficult to provide targeted information.<\/p>\r\n

Aims<\/h2>\r\n

The study aims to present the information needs of people with diabetes, to identify groups of people with diabetes mellitus with specific diabetes-related information needs (profiles), and to analyze the association between the identified profiles and other factors, for instance socio-demographic factors.<\/p>\r\n

    The KORA survey (Cooperative Health Research in the Augsburg Region) provides a population-based and representative random sample of the 25 - 74 year old population in the Augsburg region. Among other things, the study focuses on diabetes (n = approx. 800 people with diabetes). The project uses quantitative and qualitative research methods (mixed methods design) on the basis of a published questionnaire. The questionnaire records information needs on various diabetes-related subjects. The data is described using a qualitative content analysis and descriptive analyses. Furthermore, patient groups with similar information needs are identified using the Latent Class Analysis and associations between the profiles and other factors (e.g. current level of information) analyzed.<\/p>\r\n
